Lions Land van Cuijk/North Limburg supports ODU’s roof project in Irpin

ODU – HUMANITARIAN –  The Lions Club department of Land van Cuijk and Noord-Limburg provided support to the hard-hit Ukrainian city of Irpin with a golf tournament . At the annual Golf Day, the organization raised 10,000 euros for the roof project with which OpenDoorUkraine.NL helps residents of Irpin to restore their homes.
More than 120 Lions golfers and their partners and relations gathered on September 9 at the Bleijenbeek Estate in Afferden, North Limburg, for an 18-hole game of golf and for charity. Afterwards, ODU chairman Robert Serry was presented with a symbolic check of 10,000 euros for our campaign “ Help Ukrainians in Irpin with a roof over their heads ”.

With this campaign, ODU is helping the Owners’ Association of the Novooskolska 2 apartment building in Irpin, a town near Kyiv, to repair the roof so that residents can continue to repair their own homes. Thanks to the support of Lions Club Land van Cuijk and Noord-Limburg, as well as companies, humanitarian organizations and crowdfunding via the WhyDonate platform , the roof is almost complete and ODU was able to work on a second roof project in Irpin.

ODU wants to further expand this form of direct support via Ukrainian homeowners’ associations to other residential buildings in Ukraine. In Irpin alone, Russian occupiers destroyed or seriously damaged around half of all buildings in March, including 9,690 residential buildings, according to a study by the Kyiv School of Economics .

The Lions also donated 2,500 euros to a sister department in Moldova for the reception of refugees from Ukraine. “As an organization, we do not want money to be left behind,” Rob Honings of the golf committee told the daily newspaper De Gelderlander-Maasstad . “That is why we always select charities ourselves, so that we can show our golfers where the money goes.”

The meeting was given an extra Ukrainian touch because the Lions golfers had invited Ukrainian refugees from nearby Gennep. They received an extensive program with a carriage ride through the woods, a tour with luxury vintage cars, singing, coffee and Limburg pie.
