Vilniansk Regional Hospital (Zaporizhzhia Region): Restoration of the roof

Restoration of a regional hospital.

The Vilniansk Regional Hospital project addresses the critical need for roof repair of a vital medical facility in the Zaporizhia region. This regional hospital faced a series of devastating challenges, necessitating restoration.

The hospital has withstood two separate rocket attacks by Russian forces. The first attack took place in November 2022, resulting in the destruction of one of the main hospital buildings and causing damage to other buildings, including the roof of the outpatient clinic building. Tragically, the attack resulted in casualties, including the loss of a child’s life, and two doctors suffered life-changing injuries. On April 23, 2023, the hospital was attacked again, causing further damage.

In response to these dire conditions, efforts were made to restore and normalize hospital operations. This included removing debris, replacing broken windows, repairing other damage and preparing the outpatient building to relocate services previously provided in the destroyed part of the hospital. About 3.5 million Hryvna (about EURO 85,000) had already been spent on these restoration efforts. The hospital’s services are critical to the region and cover five hromadas.

Despite these efforts, the damaged roof of the outpatient clinic remained a major problem. A temporary cover had been installed, but continued leakage had caused serious damage to the ceiling of the top floor, posing a serious risk of collapse and significant safety concerns. Urgent repairs, including reroofing and ceiling repairs, were deemed essential ahead of the approaching winter to ensure the continuation of relocated services in the outpatient building.

Status:

Completed

Financial information:

  • ODU contribution: EURO 50,000 (Source: Oxfam and Lifeline Ukraine)
  • Vilniansk Hromada and hospital: 85,000 euros

Target group and results:

The ongoing roof repair project at the Vilniansk Regional Hospital plays a crucial role in preventing further capital destruction and ensuring uninterrupted services to approximately 40,000 patients per year. These services are vital for the well-being of the community and cover five hromadas in the Zaporizhia region, an area in close proximity to the front lines of conflict.

The goal of the project is to restore the structural integrity of the outpatient clinic building so that it can function effectively and safely this coming winter and beyond. By addressing the roof and ceiling issues, the project will ensure the hospital’s ability to provide essential medical care, especially in light of ongoing security threats and the region’s high demand for healthcare services.
