Reconstruction of the roof of a residential building in Irpin.
The Irpin-1 OSBB Novooskolska Phase One project represents the first step towards the reconstruction and rehabilitation of a five-storey residential building in Irpin, Ukraine. This building, which housed 40 apartments and accommodated approximately 170 people, was tragically hit by Russian rocket and tank fire during the first weeks of the war. Before the start of this project, the OSBB (Housing Co-Ownership Association) had already undertaken essential initial efforts, including removing war rubble and replacing some windows, to save the building. However, the urgency of re-roofing the structure was of paramount importance to ensure the maintenance of these efforts and the well-being of the residents.

Target group and results:
The intervention of replacing roofs before the onset of winter was a crucial step in preventing further capital destruction. This project aimed to provide shelter and hope to up to 170 residents, many of whom were internally displaced persons (IDPs) or refugees as a result of the conflict. Remarkably, about half of these individuals were able to return to their flats after the roofing work was completed.
In addition, ODU has provided two generators to support returning families in dealing with electricity outages due to the Russian bombing of the Ukrainian energy network. Furthermore, the successful completion of the first phase of this project laid the foundation for the second phase, which includes facade repair and insulation. This expansion of the project aims to enable more families to return to their flats, promote a sense of homecoming and rebuild the devastated communities affected by the war.
