Saving lives — not just human ones: animals of war at the “SOS” shelter

Recently, soldiers have been increasingly bringing animals they have rescued from the combat zone to the shelter.
Dogs and cats that have survived shelling, loss of their homes and owners arrive at the shelter in extremely poor condition — exhausted, wounded and frightened.
Some of them require urgent veterinary care, while others simply need warmth, peace and time to trust people again.

It is impressive that soldiers, who risk their lives every day on the front line, find the strength and compassion to save the lives of defenceless animals.
They carry them in their arms, wrap them in their jackets, share their rations and look for shelter for them.
This is a manifestation of true humanity, which is not lost even in the darkest times.

Despite the difficult situation, the SOS shelter in Pirogovo continues to accept animals from the frontline territories.
The shelter does everything possible to help each of its charges — we provide treatment, care and attention, and look for new owners for them.
Every life saved is a small victory that reminds us that compassion can also win the war.

We are grateful to our defenders for their humanity and to all those who care for their support.

The OpenDoorUkraine.nl Foundation supports this shelter and hopes that other animal lovers will join the initiative.
